Virtualization

Over the last few years, the technology of Virtualization has dynamically entered the IT sector.

It is a fact that the processing power of modern computers is seldom fully utilized. Usually, a server is dedicated just to one service. For example, a server is used as a Domain Controller and a second one is used as a Mail Server. That means that most of their computing power is left unused. On the other hand, the usage of a single server would result to increased complexity of installation and therefore to more frequent operational problems.

Virtualization allows us to install two services on a single server, as if we had two separate servers. The operating system is installed twice, in order to avoid the complexity of use of a single server for two services.
The Virtualization software allocates system resources dynamically between the two virtual servers, so that optimum utilization of the hardware is achieved.

The benefits of such an installation are quite obvious. Reduced purchase cost of equipment and reduced electric power consumption. Furthermore, in case of a future need of a third server, this can be implemented, in the same way as the two servers already installed, as long as this is permitted by server’s resources.
The above mentioned example obviously refers to the so-called Server Virtualization.

Accordingly we can use Virtualization to the user level, and in that case we refer to Desktop Virtualization. In that case, instead of using standard Desktops, we use low power PCs, with low consumption and rather low cost, and one or more powerful servers, which are used to “run” users’ PCs.

In that way we reduce the cost of acquisition of equipment due to the very low cost of terminal PCs and we achieve operational cost reduction, due to low consumption. Moreover, the centralized management of users’ PCs makes it much easier to troubleshoot any problems.

Briefly and in conclusion we should mention that the Virtualization solutions result to economic benefits for a company by reducing operational costs and at the same time ensure significant savings of energy resources, contributing to green growth and environmental protection.
